Have you ever gone through the dilemma and trauma of having to find a new Personal Groomer (I hate to use the over-used terms such as hairstylist when so many of them are much more than any one component of caring for you) either because you moved or because your Personal Groomer has moved? Did you know that the average length of time that a hair groomer stays in the industry is about 2 years? Then there is the groomers’ moving history. Hair groomers frequently change salons, taking (and leaving) approximately 50% of their clientele.

Oprah once had a show on how difficult it is to “fire” your Groomer. If it is the focal point of an entire Oprah show (the video of which was used in beauty schools), it doesn’t matter whether you are an Oprah fan or not, it has enough weight for consideration in the real world.
We build rather complicated relationships and communication levels with our P.G.s. For example, how many people do you let stand as close to you or touch you with such permission. There are special levels of comfort and correspondence we develop with a good PG relationship. Our outer expression MUST be in sync with who we are in order to feel “ourselves” and express ourselves to others accurately. Besides, it just feels great to look Just FINE!

Building a great relationship with your next Personal Groomer … or in stepping up your current relationship does NOT mean you must tell them your life story or problems. In fact I discourage that sort of communication. The same goes for the reverse conversation.

Your time with your Personal Groomer is YOUR time … and time and company you are paying for. Please put it to great use and learn about your hair, find personal growth oriented topics, talk about products that might be of use to you … or just have fun! Your options are endless and by the way, your problems will be there later anyway. I have many more opinions on the topic, but will only express them upon popular demand.
Here are a few tips from my Hairobics bag of tricks.

*The obvious is to ask your friends… but only if you like the results… remember, too, that you don’t want to look like them.
*Ask someone on the street whose hair and overall “style” you admire for an introduction. Look for skill and appropriateness, not that it necessarily that what you see is what you want … after all, you want to look like YOUR fabulous self in between visits.
*Interview a few Personal Groomers prior to your final decision. Many of them offer complementary consultation sessions by appointment.
*Ask the manager of the salon you are considering if you would be allowed to visit for a period of time and watch their staff work
*Look online for salons you drive by to see if you can learn anything one way or another. *There are user sites like Yelp.com who specialize in client participation and response.
*While you are shopping around, ask to see their price/service lists and perhaps even collect them for comparison before your final decision. Let’s face it money DOES make a difference.
*Discuss your budget for your care with your Personal Groomer ahead of time. Surprises hurt both parties and can get out of hand when left until the end of your service. I recommend figuring out an annual budget and dividing it up based upon the services and scheduling you prefer. I used to give my clients piggy banks with a goal marked on them for between appointment focus.

5 Steps to Washing Your Hair the Right Way

Pop quiz: “How many people know there is a right way and a wrong way to wash your hair?”

When I mentioned this subject to one of my male friends their response was “It doesn’t matter how you wash your hair!”

I asked him: “Would you ever use a steel wool to clean your car?”

He said “That would be crazy and damage the car!”

Washing your hair the wrong way will damage your hair and leave it feeling less than beautiful. For all of your guys out there using the steps below will give you hair a woman will love to run her fingers through.

Wet hair is the only hair that should be shampooed. You wouldn’t wash a car that hasn’t been rinsed off would you? Take time to make sure your hair is thoroughly wet. I am not encouraging anyone to waste water however your hair needs to be wet all the way to your scalp.

Evenly distributed shampoo is best for your hair. Avoid squirting shampoo directly onto your head. This doesn’t allow the shampoo to be evenly distributed. Putting shampoo onto your hands and evenly putting it into your hair will provide your entire scalp with a clean sensation.

Massage isn’t just for your back. Your hair is attached to your scalp is an extension of your body. Massaging your scalp does more than just feel good. A quality shampoo, such as the specialized products we provide, can penetrate deeper into your hair with a little massage. Avoid shampooing your hair more than once. Even when your hair doesn’t feel “great” one quality shampoo is far superior to shampooing twice.

Treat your hair with care. Many get rough with their hair. They scrub their hair like it is a pot with stuck on food. Be gentle with your hair. The better you treat your hair the better it will treat you!

Towel Dry. By the time you reach step 5 you should be feeling great. Your hair should have a healthy fun feeling. AND… the towel drying technique is important in so many ways! Please wring and squish your hair, not scrub it or you will hear it cry.

Winter Words for Comfort

I was scratching my arm in my quest for thoughts to share with you and it “dawned on me” that I had joined the ranks of the tortured skin crowd. I have “Winter Skin” as I have so named it through the years, which is not nearly as bad as the other conditions I support, but no fun and oh so prolific.

Out came the Dare to Wear Black and the Shea butter and I was back in business. It is not so simple for most of my clients here at Autograf, but it can help if done with fully directed and continuous use.

Because I use Dare to Wear Black and have a good water filter to bathe in, most of the year I don’t need to lotion up my skin after my shower. Nice benefit. There are the times that D2 by itself is just not enough. For those times I have discovered that a Shea butter based product with very little fragrance, takes care of me.

Seasonal Changes, Home Heat, Hair Styling Tools = Hair Damage

Are you overwhelmed by the choices for your haircare? Would you like to talk about that? I hope you will pick up the phone and call me for a personal consultation.

For now, let’s explore a few things.

One you may not think of off the top of your head is the effect of the water with which you wash your hair. Nearly half of consumers surveyed say they avoid drinking tap water. Everyone wants water that tastes better and is good for them. Many sources of our drinking water, including municipal water systems, wells, lakes, rivers, and even glaciers, contain some level of contamination.

I advocate a water filter for your shower. In fact after considerable research, I represent the one I have chosen for my luxurious locks so if you would like more information, let me know.

Let’s look at chlorine which is added to our water to protect us from impurities. This is affecting you every time you shower or relax in a bath! With its removal you will see a huge difference in the response of your hair and skin including flakiness caused by dryness.

Also, common minerals in the water can dull the surface shine and aggravate scalp issues … especially if you have hard water. Mine hair showed a difference after ONE shower and ONE shampooing! My shampoo and conditioners worked better, my hair (all 3.5 feet of it) detangled more easily and was immediately more manageable and shiny. Removing the “ingredients” in water will also help keep your salon hair color and curl truer and fresher longer as well.

This leads me to another topic; “Product-Light Haircare.” It is a new trend emerging to use fewer and less product because there is so very much to choose from. Keeping it simple can be less expensive and easier on the environment … and many feel it has health and cosmetic benefits.

Whether your hair is dry or oily, the right conditioning treatment can restore the shine to your hair… duh. Ya’ think? We agree and we salute the trend toward simplicity. While I am not recommending you resort to yogurt as a shampoo or conditioner, Autograf has a very simple system for you and yours. Wouldn’t it be nice to have fewer bottles and jars in your shower?

Environmental waste is another issue. Do you know that as a manufacturer I pay rubbish taxes to make up for all of the plastic containers that hit the garbage dumps … frequently inappropriately recycled (or not at all)?

Another short cut is to eliminate the shampoo and simply condition your hair clean. I used to do that when I did hair shows. I would apply the conditioner thoroughly, including the scalp, and sit under heat for 20 minutes for maximum hair conditioning. The oils and soil slide right down the drain. It takes longer and really doesn’t save product so I don’t bother any more, but there is something to be said for this treatment on highly processed or especially fragile hair. It can be the very best way to pamper heavily relaxed or bleached hair as well as hair that tangles exceptionally.

Passionate words for scalp comfort and health

Have you ever wondered what causes smelly hair and/or scalp of a person you love or with whom you hang out?

There are the obvious environmental issues: smoke or odorous chemicals or the use of odorous hair products … and you may consider changing your habits or your environment accordingly, but sometimes that is not possible or the cause.
Some foods such as oily fish, fried food, raw onions, medications and of course the age old favorite “garlic” will permeate through sweat glands, are more generous on your scalp and face, for hours and the next day or so even if you shampooed following their consumption.

Also, many of the waxy conditioners are magnets for picking up odors as they coat your scalp and your hair. After fragrances from products diminish, conditioning shampoos and follow-up conditioners will attract and hold the odors that you come in contact with throughout the day. Exhaust fumes, mold from buildings, etc. can be attracted to your hair, and stay out of chicken coops and barn yards unless your fashion statement requires a horsey smell.

For those types of problems Autograf has a product called “Line Design Controller” which removes at least partially (depending upon how deeply they are engrained in the follicles or hair shaft) all of these environmental odors including smoke, permanent waving and hair color products as well as animal odors.

But I digress… Smelly scalp is NOT a hygiene problem. It is an odor emanating from the scalp or hair. It plagues men, women and children and infants, with all hair lengths. The odor typically is minimal immediately after washing the hair, but continues to grow in strength throughout the day, ending quite pungently.

Many experts agree that the problem is fungus that grows on the scalp. Microorganisms live everywhere including the natural scalp, and anything that touches your hair has them as well. It is critical to change your towel, your pillow case, your hair brush & comb frequently if not daily until our condition is under control or the microorganisms may then return to your hair and scalp and contribute to the hair odor.

Do not excessively clean your hair. Shampooing more often than once a day may cause dry scalp which is unhealthy, and allows certain odor-causing bacteria and fungi to thrive on the skin.

If you use any special hair products - such as hair gel, mousse, or brilliantine, stop using them for a few days. Clean your hair properly and consult with someone close to you as to whether the odor still exists. If the products you use were the cause, and the smell from your hair is gone after you discontinue using them – stop using them altogether or replace them as it could be that the products are too old.

Are you washing your hair the wrong way? Probably.

Having trained hairdressers and barbers for many years in the art and science of hair dressing, I've noticed that they seldom educate their clients in proper shampooing methods. In fact, many don't even know these techniques themselves.

There are a number of little pointers that can make your shampooing process more effective and more fun. You will love the results, so READ THIS BLOG to find out how!

Make sure your hair is very wet. It makes it easier to distribute the shampoo and you need the water for the lathering to happen. The lather is what carries away the oils and dirt on your scalp and hair. When using the new sulfate-free products and that includes Autograf’s newest formulations, water is critical because they don’t lather in the same way that the older formulations did.

Distribute your shampoo evenly around the head. Avoid the common practice of plopping a dollop on top of your head and spreading out from there. Rub the dollop between your hands a bit and then tap it strategically around your head: over the ears, the back of the head and over the temples.

Massage with your fingertips and really work the shampoo into your scalp. Work from the outside perimeter where you have placed the shampoo up toward the crown of your head. If you are using an Autograf shampoo, be sure to leave it on for 7 minutes so the deep conditioning properties can work. Leaving it on for the extended time is better than simply washing twice with Autograf.

Be careful of your hair! Hair has cuticle layers which can snag and break. Pushing the shampoo into the hair and scrunching it is far better than scrubbing it on the hair: especially if it has any length to it. Leave the scrubbing for the scalp.

Rinse well until water runs clear. Leaving shampoo is your hair makes it dull and possibly sticky. Fortunately Autograf is easy to rinse.

Towel-dry before adding conditioners! If the water is left in your hair, it will whisk the conditioners away and down the drain when you apply them.

Add the conditioner of choice. Be sure to read the instructions first so you know how long to leave it on. Working the conditioner through the hair with your fingers or a wide tooth comb will save time in sorting and organizing (combing out) later and will distribute the conditioner more evenly especially on longer hair.

Rinse with cool water. Cooler water helps close the cuticle and protect your hair from tangling and environmental damage later on.

Towel dry again and add an “acidifier”. Acidifying the hair once again protects your hair from environmental damage and tangling. It also protects your hair from many of the styling products that have higher pH factors which can damage the hair while they are designing that look you love. Our Acidifier is called Line Design Controller and is also great for styling and blow drying.

Towel-drying your hair… Do not rub the hair with the towel as it is damaging to the hair. Instead lightly scrunch and pat your hair or wring it out wrapped in a towel if it is longer. You wring it out as if it were a wet towel while it is wrapped in the towel.

These days in America, we embrace the liberty of having free reign when it comes styling our hair and choosing styling products, but what are the latest trends in fashion and hairstyles in other parts of the world? Not all countries encourage creative expression and uniqueness.

In the Middle East, for example, Elvis-looks and side-parts are IN for men's hairstyles. Spikes, ponytails, mullets and hair-gel are OUT, and unless you're in the mood for a little Jailhouse Rock, sporting those styles can get you arrested.

At a recent hairdressing show in Tehran, Iran's capital city, the Iranian government issued a style guide for men's hair. Hair stylists were introduced to the approved Iranian style guide, implemented by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. Barbershops have reportedly been shut down and penalized for western-style haircuts, while Iranian police enforce morality checks. Women in short coats and unapproved headscarves have been arrested, along with men sporting spiky hair or ponytails.

Later this month, Iran is also exhibiting a "Modesty and Veil Festival" showcasing the expectations for appropriate hair and dress. According to the prayer leader in Tehran, "Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society, which increases earthquakes." Seriously? That kind of thinking gets me "all shook up".

Many of the new looks require styling potions for enhancement or support. These potions can be very damaging and stressful, plus they can leave buildup on your hair, so when using them, it is important to pay special attention to your hair's health.

* Textured looks create a multicultural feeling.

* Perms are IN! For root volume or texture design and shape.

* Solid bobs are out . . . softer pixie cuts are in.

* Styling products are hot - but they can damage, which reinforces the need for hair health products like Autograf.

I sit in front of my computers wondering what will make a difference today... in my circle of influence. I enjoy that about my life and career... I have had so many opportunities to make a difference in others' lives.

Scratching MY Head for What You Want

A couple of days ago I went to a great educational marketing event put on by Dominic Canterbury. The point was to learn more about talking to you. It was a beautiful evening in a darling neighborhood haunt with way more people than expected, so some very interesting dynamics evolved. Because the place was crowded, we not only had the marketing presenter doing great things, but also had sub topic conversations filling in the gaps from when you couldn't hear the main conversations. Did I mention that we had a corner in a coffee bar/lounge? The music was also competing for our attention, so one had to be really dedicated to stay involved with the program! The great news was that the sub-text conversations added to the value of the entire program.

What on earth hasn't she tried? Until now, she had not tried Autograf's Dare To WEAR BLACK Scalp Specific Shampoo®! I forgot to ask how she found me, but we got to chatting on my new client follow-up call and the story began.

At this hour, Maggi is sitting under heat with plastic over her head awaiting a dinger as if she had a beauty treatment on her head instead of a bactericidal, fungicidal, germicidal on her head ... she is sitting waiting for a food preservative to solve her long, torturous problem! Flaky Friends at Play!

Who would have thought that helping a friend test out a sail boat would end up in talking "Scalp" with yet another Flaky Friend! But chat we did, and whether it is Psoraiasid, Eczema or Dandruff, even the boating crowd needed Dare To WEAR BLACK Scalp Specific Shampoo!

Not only did I help the "victim" and his family with the product, I was able to shed light on problems that were adding to the misery ... Laundry Soap! LAUNDRY SOAP? YUP, laundry supplies are a major cause of skin irritation that can turn into skin crusties, itchy fakes and sores. There are simple processes for laundry relief ... they are actually best practice even for people without sensitive skin.

WHAT can be simpler than dumping clothes and laundry supplies into a washing machine and pressing "GO"? This: Fill the tub, add the products and then wait until the tank is half full before adding the clothes! It works. I do it EVERY time and my skin is healthy... for now.

... about a friend with life-long trials with his personal version of eczema or psoriasis or some such issue। It comes and goes in waves but his medical care team has never tracked it, simply issued perscription after perscription, year after year।

I recommended that he keep a journal especially noticing the onset pattern, tracking the longevity of the attack and noticing what is going on in his life। As with other people, this seems to be difficult to monitor because they are so miserable, itching, lacking sleep and quality of life at this time। It is however, critical if anyone can help.
